Chinese Acupuncture: Is it the answer to Menopausal Hot Flushes?

By Penny Walker

Abstract

The menopause - the cessation of a woman’s monthly period. Today, what should be a normal, personal physiological event is now accompanied by hard sell, high emotion and much controversy. It appears that few women can approach the menopause fully informed and totally confident that what they are experiencing is normal. HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) is used to relieve the symptoms of the menopause.

My research investigates the use of acupuncture in the treatment of the menopausal symptoms of hot flushes and the use of HRT for treatment of those symptoms.

Four subjects were involved in the research, each experiencing hot flushes. All four subjects received six treatments of acupuncture. Then a period of no less than 8 weeks, but no longer than 12 weeks, was left before the final acupuncture treatment was given. Throughout the research the subjects were asked to fill in questionnaires. The findings of the research were that all four subject’s hot flushes were reduced, thus reducing other related symptoms such as disturbed sleeping patterns.

It is hoped that this research, be it very limited in the number of subjects and the length of the actual research, will offer a possible alternative for women who cannot or do not wish to receive drug therapy. (key words: HRT, Acupuncture and Menopause.)
