Policy on the Live-Streaming of In-Person Teaching Sessions
- Students who are unable to attend in-person teaching sessions may ask a fellow student to live-stream the session to them.
- Live-streaming should only take place in emergency-type circumstances and should be an occasional or temporary happening. It is not to be regarded as a regular substitute for in-person teaching.
- Live-streaming is only possible where the session is “lecture style”. Live-streaming of clinical skills sessions is strictly not allowed under any circumstances.
- Recording of any in-person teaching sessions is strictly not allowed under any circumstances.
- NCA cannot be involved in any way in the streaming of sessions, since this represents an additional burden for teaching staff that can be stressful while teaching.
- The lecturer must agree to the teaching being streamed. If the lecturer does not agree, the session cannot be streamed. It is helpful if the request can be made by the student with as much notice as possible.
- It is the remote student’s responsibility to request a member of their cohort to do this for them, and to secure the necessary permission from the lecturer.
- The student who is responsible for doing the streaming in the classroom should announce to the group as a whole that it is happening.
- Live-streaming should not disrupt the learning of the student who is doing the streaming on behalf of the remote student. It is the streaming student’s own responsibility to avoid this disruption and decline the request to stream if necessary.
- The session is taught ‘to the room’ and not to the live-stream. Students watching a live stream may miss some parts of a session, for instance if small group-work is taking place, or if the lecturer moves away from the live-stream microphone. To preserve the quality of in-person teaching, remote students should not interrupt (for example to request repetition of material) and they may not be able to contribute to discussions.
- Live-streaming should be paused during breaks to enable those in the rooms to speak freely.
- Live-streaming is not recorded as attendance.
This policy supersedes any policy or part of a policy touching on this issue in the version of the College Handbook or any other source of College policy current at the time of writing.
