Resits, Resubmissions And Fails

The following procedures apply to all assessments:

Re-sits and Resubmissions

All Undergraduate courses and taught components of Masters courses:

When an assessment is failed at the first attempt, students are entitled to one resit for each exam and to one resubmission for each written assignment.

In-course reassessment of individual elements of a module is permitted, with one opportunity for reassessment for any assessment which is failed on first submission.

The maximum mark that can be achieved for a re-sit or resubmission of an assessment is the bare pass mark (BSc students 40%, MSc students 50%).

In the case of written assignments,

  • if the assignment consists of set questions, the tutor will set a new paper for a resubmission.

  • If the assignment consists of a unique and individual piece of work (such as a Clinical Practice case history, or a Practitioner Development self-reflective essay), the original piece of work can be revised and resubmitted.

Resubmitted assignments must state clearly on the front sheet that the work is a resubmission.

In the case of in-course reassessment of written assignments, the setting of dates for resubmissions is the responsibility of the tutor who marked the work. Resubmission dates will normally be one month after the date of return of the marked first submission.

When the return date for a marked written assignment is within six weeks of the Progression and Finalists Assessment Board meeting, re-submission will be required by 1st August.

Deferred submissions due to extenuating circumstances will be deferred to an agreed date, normally 1st August at the latest.

For examination re-sits, or delayed first sits due to extenuating circumstances, the setting of dates is the responsibility of the Course Director.

Re-sits of competency assessments are scheduled by the Module Leader or Clinic Supervisor.

Masters Dissertations and Research Projects

Re-submission dates for MSc dissertations and research projects are up to one year from the date of notification of failure. The maximum mark that can be achieved for a resubmission of a dissertation or research project is the bare pass mark (50%). The dissertation/research project is a unique and individual piece of work, so the original piece of work can be revised in line with the examiners’ recommendations and resubmitted.

All Assessments

Failure without good reason to undertake reassessment by the specified date will result in failure.

Where it is not practical to repeat a component of assessment the Assessment Board may specify an alternative form of assessment, provided that the alternative appears to be fair given the facilities available to the candidate.

The Assessment Boards may impose any reasonable conditions on a student undertaking reassessment.

Failed Modules

A module can be failed as the result of a fail in the assessment or as a result of failing to achieve the attendance requirement. The pass criteria for assessment for each module, and the attendance requirements, are given in the module information.

If a student fails a module overall having been given one opportunity to re-sit or resubmit each failed assessment, or as a result of failing to meet the attendance requirement, then the student no longer has an automatic right of re-entry to the College, but the Assessment Board may allow the student to attend an interview to assess the suitability of either (1) re-submitting or re-sitting an assessment again, or (2) re-entering at the start of the failed module, with payment of the fee. If the latter option is taken up, no new modules can be commenced until the failed module(s) has been retaken and a Pass has been achieved. Marks for a reassessed module(s) are not capped. Modules can normally be repeated on one occasion only.

Where a student is given formal permission to repeat a stage on compassionate grounds, this may exceptionally include permission to repeat a module that has already been passed. In such cases, the higher of the two credits will be counted towards the final qualification.

Failed Dissertations and Research Projects (taught MScs)

The assessment board may allow one opportunity to resubmit a failed dissertation or MSc research project. The best mark allowed for a resubmitted dissertation/research project is 50%.

Students who pass the taught component but then do not submit a dissertation or research project, or who fail the dissertation/research project both on first submission and on re-submission, will be awarded the Post-Graduate Diploma.
