Providing References for Students
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to set out the College’s response to requests for references for students / previous students.
The policy is designed to treat students fairly and provide the requesting organisation with information that is factual and not based on personal views.
Scope
This policy applies to all staff working at the Northern College of Acupuncture.
Policy Statement and Implementation
- The NCA regularly receives requests from other organisations to provide references for students or former students. Information should not be freely provided until permission from the student has been sought and confirmed.
- Students requesting references should put their request in writing to
- All references provided under this policy will be prepared by the Registry team and will be provided in an objective, accurate and fair manner. It may not be possible to respond to pre-printed reference questions or letters where the information requests the opinion of the NCA on the suitability of the individual.
- Any members of staff who are asked to provide a reference for a student/former student must forward the request to to provide the response. Under no circumstances should any members of staff provide references, either written or verbal, on behalf of the NCA.

- Any references written will be stored in the student’s file, or on the Student Information System* (depending on where the student’s file is located). *Salesforce, at the time of writing this policy.
- Student References will be based on factual information only.
