Welcome to research at the NCA!

NCA is a world-renowned centre of excellence for research into acupuncture, nutrition and Chinese herbal medicine. Our active programmes of research focus on the effectiveness and implementation of our therapies, and on innovation in andragogy and heutagogy to develop the next generation of highly-skilled, successful practitioners.
We have built a vibrant, cohesive, self-critical and rigorous research culture in the College. In the classroom and clinic environment, we support our students to become critical thinkers, developing a spirit of curiosity and critical enquiry and keeping our professions at the cutting-edge of therapeutic utility while equipping our graduates to become lifelong learners.
We have an active programme of research led by our staff, with opportunities for students that complement their studies. This leads to the creation of new and scientifically rigorous knowledge that builds the evidence-base for our therapies, and benefits communities of patients and our therapeutic disciplines, right across the world. We offer a range of support for research in our subject areas, including support for graduates wishing to undertake a PhD.
NCA Research Strategy (2025-30)
The NCA Research Strategy aligns with the College’s overall mission statement, and with the wider College strategy: to advance the subject areas and professions in our areas of interest, growing their professionalisation and research base to promote acceptance of our disciplines for the wider public good; and to promote an inclusive, supportive, high-quality, research-informed and stimulating learning environment for the diversity of our student population. We aim to target our research to add value for students and staff, and drive innovation for our therapies and andragogic activity.
Research programme priorities for 2025-30
- Support excellence in classroom-based research activity;
- Develop the vibrant research culture in the College;
- Develop our staff-based research programmes and the opportunities for students in-programme;
- Develop our andragogic research to support quality of teaching, learning and assessment on our courses.
