NCA timeline

1988 - College founded by Hugh MacPherson and Nicolas Haines. College’s first cohort starts with a Diploma in Acupuncture (DipAc).

1989 - Richard Blackwell started as a tutor.

1990 - NCA research wing – Foundation for Research into Traditional Chinese Medicine - launched.

1991 - First acupuncture cohort graduated.

1994 - Professional Diploma in Chinese Herbal Medicine launched.

1995 - First course in Acupuncture in the UK to gain University validation (as an MSc).

1996 - MSc in Acupuncture gains professional accreditation.

1999 - Richard Blackwell appointed as Principal.

2000 -

  • College becomes a registered charity.
  • College moves to current building on Micklegate.

2004 - First MSc in Chinese Herbal Medicine in the UK to gain University validation.

2008 -

  • College celebrates 20 years anniversary.
  • MSc/PGDip in Nutritional Therapy launched.
  • First BSc in Acupuncture course runs.

2012 - E-learning developed for all our courses.

2014 - Online masters courses for practitioners launched.

2017 - NICE recognise acupuncture as a treatment for low backpain.

2018 - College celebrates 30 years anniversary.

2020 -

  • New validating partner Health Sciences University (formerly University College of Osteopathy).
  • The sad loss of Prof Hugh Macpherson.

2021 -

  • NICE guidelines recommend acupuncture for chronic pain.
  • The Practitioner Hub launched.

2023 - Chinese Medicine Nutrition Diploma launched.
