Does Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang offer a multi-system, multitarget approach to the treatment of ME/CFS? A selective literature review

Abstract

Introduction

Myalgic encephalomyelitis (MR) or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) affects multiple systems of the body, resulting in a wide range of symptoms. Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (BZYQT) is a classic formula traditionally used to treat ME/CFS. There is limited research on its use in the treatment of ME/CFS; however, it is a much-studied formula with an evidence base that suggests it exerts an effect on many biological systems and targets. The aim of this study is to evaluate this evidence base and establish whether there is a correlation between the systems and targets affected by BZYQT and those that are indicated within ME/CFS.

 

Study design

This study will be a selective literature review. A literature search will be made of electronic databases using the search term “Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang” and its synonyms; papers that meet inclusion criteria will be critically evaluated and synthesised.

 

Data analysis plan

Papers will be selected according to their relevance to the systems and targets involved in ME/CFS. Care will be taken to prevent selection bias by creating clear inclusion/exclusion criteria and the use of a second reviewer. The resulting data will be synthesised using an appropriate model, and discussed according to system and target. The synthesis will aim to draw conclusions at the level of both individual systems and the multi-system level.
