What are the treatment approaches of Chinese Herbal Medicine Practitioners for male fertility patients? A semi-structured qualitative interview study

Abstract
Introduction
Male fertility support involves a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and lifestyle factors, with an increasing recognition of the integral role that mental health and lifestyle support play in reproductive well-being. This qualitative interview study intends to investigate how Chinese Herbal Medicine Practitioners (CHMPs) approach male fertility patients from the initial meeting and throughout the treatments considering factors such as diet and lifestyle advice and the patients’ responses and compliance rates, our research seeks to uncover the nuanced ways in which CHMPs address all aspects of male fertility cases. By proposing an interview schedule specifically designed to prompt reflections on their approaches to these cases, we aim to elucidate the holistic support provided by CHMPs. This study’s goal is to contribute valuable qualitative data to the evolving and expanding landscape of male fertility interventions and, more importantly, to outline the significance of integrating Chinese Herbal Medicine, mental health support, dietary advice, and lifestyle recommendations into future reproductive health support strategies.
Aim
This study aims to gain insight from experienced Chinese Herbal Medicine Practitioners on how they differ their treatment approaches for male fertility patients.
Study Design
Active members (or retired in the past 5 years) of the regulatory CHM bodies will consent to participate in an interview (semi-structured). A preliminary literature review will be carried out to review current research and theories in this field. An interview schedule, containing a guide of questions and topics to discuss, will be completed with any consenting and approved participants. The researcher will then use thematic analysis to conclude the findings from the series of interviews and present them as an article with an accompanying poster.
Data Analysis Plan
The data from the semi-structured interviews with participants will be transcribed fully and organised under codes and themes, following Braun and Clarkes’ (2021) Thematic Analysis guidelines.
Ethics issues
Ethics risks concerning CHMPs will be considered, and the recruitment of qualified CHMPs and no persons considered to be vulnerable will be included in this study. The potential for bias is also acknowledged in section 11.
